Cartoon version of classic tale causes stir

A group of Vietnamese filmmakers has recently caused a stir on the Internet, thanks to their first project: making a 3D cartoon version of the renowned Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen’s tale “The Little Match Girl”.

In just three days since its release on November 22, the 1-minute 23-second trailer from the movie made by True – D Animation Studio has received more than 26,000 views with almost 800 likes from Youtube users.
In the clip, the main character, a little girl selling matches on a cold New Year’s Eve, has impressed audiences with wide, innocent eyes. The vivid background landscape and sweet music has also gotten compliments from viewers.

“It’s touching and beautiful. The music is amazing too! Good job guys!”, commented a user named concaran.

Many others said that this movie is a big step forward for the Vietnamese cartoon industry.

Still, some others said they would have loved the movie if it had been a cartoon adapted from a Vietnamese tale.

Responding to such critiques, True – D said “The Little Match Girl” is its first project to apply the techniques they have learned.

The group also revealed that the next project will be a funny cartoon with Vietnamese content.

The group, which includes 10 members, has not taken any master classes on making 3D cartoons. They have learned from the Internet and shared experiences to finish the 6-minute 30-second film.

The group also hopes the movie will be screened at cinemas or on TV. “If it’s hard to release the movie those ways, we will put it on Youtube as a gift for the people who always support us,” they shared.

“In the future, we do hope to make long 3D cartoons to serve Vietnamese audiences,” they added.

In related news, last June, “Duoi Bong Cay (In the Shade of the Tree),” a 7-minute Vietnamese 3D cartoon made by a group of students between the ages of 18 and 28 received positive feedback and became a sensation when it attracted over 300,000 views in just one week.

The movie, which impressed audiences with its lively characters, funny plot, and cute dubbed voices, was shown for free at the Ho Chi Minh City-based BHD cinema before every film.
